feinberg school of medicine competencies

This document was adopted as policy by the May 2005 House of Delegates of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and serves as a map for the individual PA, the physician-PA team and organizations that are committed to promoting the development and maintenance of the professional competencies among physician assistants. Our graduates will demonstrate knowledge of community factors that influence individual, community and public health and will gain perspective and experience through service activities within their local or global communities. Ours is a competency-based education framework. Foremost, it involves prioritizing the interests of those being served above one’s own. The PA profession defines the specific knowledge, skills and attitude required and provides educational experiences as needed in order for physician assistants to acquire and demonstrate these competencies. Subjects represented all trainees from internal medicine (n=47), emergency medicine (n=13), anesthesiology (n=11), and general surgery (n=10), who entered GME at Northwestern University in June 2013. This structure explicitly defines our curricular expectations and goals as well as our assessment standards. This was an institutional review board‐approved pre‐post study of 81 new PGY‐1 residents' ECG interpretation skills.
